This year’s Stater Bros. Charities Awards Banquet was held on Sunday, February 28, 2010 at the Historic Mission Inn in Riverside. Over 250 guests attended an evening to honor local heroes that have gone beyond the call of duty to help the Southern California communities.

Dr. Leonard Bailey, pioneer of infant heart transplant surgery received the prestigious Norton Award while Brigadier General Herman S. Clardy, III, Martha Green, Linda Rice, Jo Ann Mineer and Sheriff Stanley L. Sniff, Jr. were recipients of the Hero of the Heartland award. Stater Bros. Charities donated $5,000 to the charity of choice for each Heartland awardee and a $10,000 donation in honor of Dr. Bailey.

The evening included both a live and silent auction to help raise money and awareness for Stater Bros. Charities. Amy Scruggs, USO performer and songwriter preformed the National Anthem acapella while Duane McGee, Chaplain at the Loma Linda VA Medical Center led the attendees in prayer. Established at the inaugural Stater Bros. Charities Awards Banquet, the Norton Award is given to individuals who serve the communities they live in.

CAPTAIN LELAND F. NORTON
A native son of San Bernardino, Captain Leland F. Norton joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941 after attending San Bernardino Valley College. A year later, he transferred to the U.S. Army Air Corps, writing home that he now wore "USA on my sleeve."

At age 23, Norton was in England with the 640th Bomb Squadron flying missions over enemy-occupied France. While on his 16th mission, his bomber, part of a 38-aircraft formation, was hit by antiaircraft fire. Captain Norton stayed at the controls of his A-20 aircraft until his crew had all safely bailed out; but by then, it was too late for him.

For his heroic actions, Captain Norton was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC), the highest Air Force Award, the Purple Heart, and the Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, which are all on display at the Stater Bros. Corporate Offices. In 1950, the Air Force renamed San Bernardino Air Depot to Norton Air Force Base. In 2007, Stater Bros. opened its new Corporate Offices and Norton Distribution Center on the site of the former Norton Air Force Base.

Captain Norton represented duty to country, to community and to family. His legacy and contributions will continue to be remembered and embodied by the recipients of this award in his honor.

2010 LELAND F. NORTON HERO AWARD RECIPIENT LEONARD BAILEY, MD
Dr. Leonard Bailey developed a vision for infant heart transplantation during his residency program when he saw that otherwise perfect babies were dying from hypoplastic left heart syndrome-a congenital heart defect that defied successful reconstructive heart surgery. He performed over 200 experimental transplantations in infant research animals to determine the feasibility of transplantation in the very young before his first human transplantation in October 1984 when he transplanted a baboon heart into the infant known as Baby Fae.

In November 1985, he performed the first successful human to human heart transplantation in a newborn baby. Thanks to Dr. Bailey; thousands of children have a hope for tomorrow - over 2,000 infant heart transplants have been done worldwide. Transplantation remains a small portion of Dr. Bailey's practice, which involves all types of congenital heart disease in all age groups.

With many scientific publications, Dr. Bailey is an internationally recognized authority on congenital heart surgery and infant heart transplantation. He is the Distinguished Professor of Surgery of Loma Linda University School of Medicine and Surgeon-in-Chief of Loma Linda University Children's Hospital.

Dr. Bailey lives in Southern California with his wife Nancy. They have two sons.
